Life Insurance—It’s Not for You, It’s for Them

We do so much for the ones we love. Some things are big: It might be having our parents live with us as they age, lending a financial hand to a friend in need, or saving for our kids’ college education.

Many are small—and may even go unnoticed. It might be tucking a note into our child’s lunch, taking our loved one’s car in for repair (so they don’t have to!), or making fried chicken from scratch for Sunday dinner.

Why do we do these things? Often they are selfless acts; often it’s only our loved ones who reap the benefits, but we do those things, big and small, because we love them.

The same is true when we buy life insurance. We buy it because we love someone (or a whole family of someones!) and want to make sure they’ll be OK financially if something were to happen to us. We’d want them to continuing living in the same home, enjoying the same neighborhood, going to the same schools, all the details that make up our lives with our loved ones.

Life insurance is a gift of love that we give to those who love us. Of course we hope we’ll never have to use it, but it’s good to know it’s there.

So who needs life insurance? It depends on someone’s personal financial situation, but most people who have someone who depends on them financially could benefit from life insurance, including:

  • Parents whose income is important to the family’s financial well-being
  • Stay-at-home parents, who do so many unpaid tasks that keep families growing and thriving
  • Single people who may have debt they don’t want to leave to their family, or family members they want to take care of
  • Couples just starting out who have joint bills, obligations and dreams
  • Couples who are transitioning to retirement, but may still have financial gaps in their nest-egg

It’s for them

There’s an often-heard objection regarding life insurance that goes something like this, “I don’t need life insurance. I won’t be around to see that money.”

And it’s true, you won’t.* But that statement misses the point of most life insurance purchases: Life insurance isn’t for those who die, it’s for those who live. The money won’t bring you back, but life insurance will be there to help ensure that your family will have extra assistance with your final expenses while they grieve.

In addition, the selfless act of getting life insurance doesn’t have to break the bank. A life insurance professional can help you find the right type of coverage that fits in your budget.

*There are some types of life insurance, such as permanent life insurance with the potential for cash value accumulation and an Accelerated Death Benefit, generally allowing early access to a portion of the death benefit.
